Fitness classes

Daily ATA offers a morning stretch class before hiking the best trails in the state followed by excursions to Vermont's quaint villages.  Post hike, guests can unwind with a late afternoon yoga class and/or a massage if desired. During busy times, a water aerobics course is offered.  But the fun doesn't stop there, after dinner our registered dietitian presents cooking demonstrations while discussing nutritional facts and myths. We also offer personal trainers a la carte for those guest seeking additional work outs.

ATA's owner is engaged daily with the guests encouraging them to get out of the fitness classrooms and go hiking.  Why would you come to Vermont or to any spa elsewhere and spend your time exercising indoors in a closed room when you could be outdoors obtaining the same results while exploring mother nature?

Re-educating your muscles to not get tight and sore in the first place. Each class introduces several techniques that you can easily use at work and home.

Yoga

ATA's classes are taught in a fun, loving, nurturing environment catering to a variety of levels from novice to advanced students. After a hiking yoga is a relaxing way to end the day. Yoga, often translated as union, is a process of self-inquiry that begins with experiencing the connection between body and mind and leads to the discovery of your true nature.

Yoga is a 5,000 year-old system of self-development. The heart of yogic teachings lies in the belief that a self-fulfilled person is a healthy person, free from disease caused by stress and improper living habits. The practice of yoga is designed to lead the student to ever-increasing knowledge of his or her self and the needs of the body, emotions and mind in order to achieve and maintain good physical, emotional and mental health and spiritual harmony. Yoga, in short, is a science of self-development that deals with the whole human being.

Darlene M. Kepner is one of our yoga instructors and has a BA in Psychology with a strong background in Alternative Medicine. She is trained in Foundational Vinyasa and in the Anatomy of Yoga. Darlene is the wellness coordinator of Central Vermont Public Services and the owner of Plan B Yoga and Wellness. Concentrating on alternative medicines, she graduated from Johnson State College located here in Vermont. Darlene received her first formal yoga teacher training in April of 2006 with a world renowned instructor. Darlene looks forward to sharing the gift of yoga with ATA guests.

Water Aerobics

Are only offered during busy times or à la carte. ATA's classes are just plain great, using weights, actually running, jogging and stepping in the water. While no single exercise is perfect for everyone, Water Aerobics comes close by conforming to individual needs, restrictions, and abilities. By adjusting the size and speed of your movements, you can change the level of exertion to suit your needs. It allows a person to exercise every muscle and every joint in the body all at the same time.

Another benefit of water aerobics is that you can do it, no matter your age. The reason for this is because the water causes your body to be buoyant, thus causing less stress on your joints and muscles. It provides a great deal of resistance in all directions for your muscles to work against.

Personal Trainers Consults

ATA's personal trainers will be available, by appointment, for individual fitness consults.  They can design a training program specifically for you based on your individual profile including age, exercise history, fitness level, goals, available equipment, schedule availability, medical history, etc. We design programs for home, gym, or on the road, and for use with a variety of exercise equipment or even no equipment at all. All consultations are kept confidential.  Some fitness issues they can address are:

Weight Control

Body fat calculations and measurements

Explanation of proper use of fitness equipment

Osteoporosis
